Professor
Mike Jaramillo

Mike Jaramillo, a 5th-degree black belt, is the Head Instructor and co-founder of Renzo Gracie East Side Martial Arts. After starting BJJ over 25 years ago, Mike has been a competitor at the highest levels, winning the IBJJF World Championship and European Championship as a black belt and garnering a silver medal in the
IBJJF Pan Am Championships.

A longtime member at the Renzo Gracie Academy (RGA), Mike was the first student to receive a black belt from John Danaher, perhaps the most famous instructor/coach in BJJ. One of the most notable experiences he had while training with John was being a main training partner for George St-Pierre, often referred to as the greatest MMA fighter of all time, as he prepared for many of his UFC fights. Mike went on to coach and corner several MMA fighters, including Jared Gordon and Phillipe Nover.

On the BJJ mats, Mike has distinguished himself as a world-renowned teacher, particularly as the head nogi instructor at RGA. His attention to detail is unparalleled, as is his passion for spreading the love of BJJ to everyone in the room, from the high level pros to the shy hobbyist hiding in the corner. Visitors have traveled from all over the globe to attend Mike’s classes in the legendary “blue basement”, drawn by his ability to improve their BJJ game like nothing else.

One of Mike’s fundamental beliefs is that BJJ can change lives: as students of all ages develop their skills as BJJ players, they also develop as individuals in ways that benefit them at home, at work or school, and in their communities. He is devoted to supporting his students in their growth, both on and off the mats. It’s this belief that inspired him to create The Happy Pill Project, which reaches tens of thousands of people through free BJJ content, as well as to support the We Defy Foundation, which provides combat veterans coping with military-connected disabilities a long term means to overcome their challenges through BJJ.

A lifelong entrepreneur, Mike is thrilled to bring his business expertise and his passion for BJJ together here at Renzo Gracie East Side, where he hopes that everyone – students, staff, and instructors – have the opportunity to become the best versions of themselves through the magic of BJJ.
